Mandela SMSes still flowing

Thousands of SMSes for former president Nelson Mandela`s 90th birthday are still streaming in as part of an international campaign to raise funds for his various charity initiatives.

The project runs until 9 August in SA and is sponsored domestically by Vodacom.

While SMSes in SA cost R20, free text messages can also be sent via the Nelson Mandela birthday message Web site, with an option to donate various amounts of money.

All cellphone SMSes sent in SA are also forwarded to the Web site.

Internationally, Tanzania is leading the pack, with nearly 30 000 SMSes sent to the birthday Web site, with SA coming in second at just over 15 500 SMSes. Germany is third, with just over 10 000 SMSes sent.

Donations will be split equally between the Nelson Mandela Institute for and Rural Development, the Nelson Mandela Children`s Fund, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, and the 46664 campaign.

Chantal Cuddumbey, 46664 communications manager, could not yet clarify how much of every R20 SMS would go to the various charities and how much would go to service providers, saying the contributions would be collated at the end of the campaign.

Dot Field, chief communications officer for Vodacom, says the SMS campaign is "part of a global campaign and, as such, the statistics thereof should be obtained from the Nelson Mandela Foundation".
