mapIT's 10-year anniversary represents its growth and evolution; from beginnings as a data provider to the foremost integrated digital mapping solution provider in Africa.
Today, mapIT covers 104 countries and territories and 34.8 million kilometres of road globally, which includes 10 countries and 1.7 million kilometres coverage in southern Africa.
This company's remarkable growth and ongoing evolution are bolstered through:
* Its partnership with shareholders TomTom Africa (the world's premier provider of map data) and Avusa;
* MarketScope, mapIT's Location Business Intelligence and demographic research tool;
* LBS APIs featuring Live HD Traffic feeds through TomTom;
* Longstanding success and partnership with tracking and fleet management clients;
* New brand identity that introduces a new logo and revamped Web site (www.mapit.co.za), which includes myriad new functionality such as Live Traffic and free maps; and
* Recent exclusive distribution agreement with LBS (location-based services) global platform leader, deCarta.
“Our growth has been phenomenal over the last 10 years; however, it is particularly our partnerships with shareholders TomTom Africa, Avusa and licensed partners, our strong relationships with our clients, commitment to development and the distribution agreement with deCarta that have enabled us to become a dominant player in a highly competitive global digital mapping marketplace. We are today a leading international enabler of accurate location-based platforms,” comments Etienne Louw, MD of mapIT.
“We are a bona fide one-stop shop for companies that require a platform to develop customised LBS. Indeed, we now provide an integrated package based on the world's leading solutions to our partner network across the sub-Saharan Africa region.”
mapIT's services today include Web mapping, mobile mapping, digital mapping services, location-based services (LBS) and location business intelligence across many industries. The company's mapping APIs, for example, features one line map search, turn-by-turn navigation, supports POI (points of interest), live traffic feeds from TomTom, and can either be self-hosted or accessed through the cloud computing-based mapping service.
“Part of our growth is to ensure that our partners move forward with us. We believe it is important that businesses have the opportunity to realise their visions and designs in an environment that meets world-class requirements for digital mapping solutions,” comments Louw.
Critical to mapIT's growth has been its longstanding relationship with fleet management and tracking clients. Today, mapIT holds an 85% market share, which has seen its services grow from providing maps and navigation to advanced geospatial services. Clients include some of the country's most prominent corporates.
mapIT's growth is not only represented by its business prowess, but also its contribution to society. In 2011, the company's CSI programme, the mapIT Foundation, was involved in a number of important projects within the South African community.
These include the Compass Project - a nationwide HIV counselling and testing campaign - that uses mapIT's MarketScope to assist with its research and development; the Momentum Big Heart, which raised funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and which utilised mapIT's cutting-edge digital map to track the eight Momentum employees running 750km from Johannesburg to Durban; and the provision of a digital map for Jumping Kids, a prosthetic fund for disabled children in SA that raised funds for a young disabled golfer.
“mapIT is undoubtedly a company that has gone through many exciting changes that could almost be called a revolution as opposed to an evolution. We feel privileged to have strong partnerships and relationships with both global and local companies that have all contributed to our success. 2012 will no doubt see us moving ahead and establishing us as the premier providers of LBS and digital mapping technologies for today and the future,” concludes Louw.
