mapIT, a supplier of maps and map , and MiX Telematics, a provider of driver safety, vehicle tracking and fleet management products and services, are sponsoring two teams participating in this year's Put Foot Rally.

The rally is a 17-day-long, 7 000km journey that will run from 20 June to 6 July.

According to the companies, both Team International and Goofy Gophers are supporting the Project Rhino cause, an association of groups fighting rhino poaching in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Put Foot Foundation, which was created by Daryn Hillhouse, Mike Sharman and Dan Nash, acts as an umbrella organisation for other charities, including Project Rhino. The foundation says it aims to build on the vision started by the Bobs For Good Foundation and also hopes to raise enough funds to buy a minimum of 600 pairs of shoes, which will be given to underprivileged schoolchildren.

The rally, which is in its second year, starts and finishes in Johannesburg and includes checkpoints in Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique, the foundation says.

Both Team International and Goofy Gophers have had their vehicles fitted with MiX Telematics tracking units that will enable a direct feed to a designated Web site, according to the company.

Charles Tasker, MD of MiX Telematics, says this will allow supporters to track the teams' progress in real-time. It also lets supporters engage with the teams and generates exposure for the event and the teams' cause.

Etienne Louw, MD of mapIT, says the Put Foot Rally is the perfect opportunity to support the rhino cause and also showcase mapIT's abilities. “MapIT's affiliation with the campaign will not end this year; in 2013 we aim to track all teams taking part in the rally, which will allow supporters to follow their favourite teams,” adds Louw.
