Marconi Corporation plc`s Transportation group is pioneering a new approach to maintenance and support services for roadside communication networks.
The group has won the first Technology Maintaining Agency Contract awarded by the Highways Agency. The contract, won in partnership with Atkins Consultants, covers the Midlands region of England, is valued at over lb6 million and will run for three years, commencing on 1 April 2004.
The Midlands TechMAC is the first time that the Highways Agency has agreed to a `one-stop-shop` system that allows contractors and management consultants to operate as a partnership to provide roadside communications maintenance. The contract covers maintenance and management of motorway and trunk road communications as well as signalling in the entire Midlands region.
"The new-style TechMAC heralds the way forward in service provision and highlights the importance of roadside electronics in the Highways Agency`s initiatives to improve vehicle capacity on the roads network," said Steve Harris, Director, Marconi Transportation.
"Marconi and Atkins complement each other`s areas of expertise and will work closely with the Highways Agency in Birmingham to improve services to drivers in this very important section of England`s roads network."
The Marconi-Atkins partnership will cover the counties of West Midlands, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and part of Herefordshire. The TechMAC contract will be managed from a base at Marconi`s premises at New Century Park in Coventry and will provide 24-hour, 365-days service to the Highways Agency with engineers and technicians located throughout the region.
TechMACs replace the Regional Maintenance Contracts (RMCs) and Regional Maintenance Contract, Managing Consultant (RMCMC) system operated by the Highways Agency in the past. TechMACs cover wider regional areas than original RMCs providing economies of scale and simplifying contractors` relationships with the Highways Agency. TechMACs also allow contractors more discretion to work with consultants and clients directly to provide the best value support for the network in their region.
Marconi Transportation is already established as a major service provider to the Highways Agency and is currently contracted in the Northwest and East Midlands of England as the maintainer for motorway communications equipment as well as providing management and maintenance for the Highways Agency`s private communications network throughout England.
"The Midlands TechMAC contract further underpins Marconi`s reputation as a major service provider to the Highways Agency and our commitment to working with government agencies in the wider transportation arena," Harris said.
