Marconi has added a series of advanced optical products to its optical networking portfolio for service providers. The new products include the SmartPhotoniX PLT80 solution for long haul, point-to-point transport and the SmartPhotoniX PMM solution for metropolitan DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) transmission.
Koos Vorster, chief executive of Marconi Communications South Africa (MCSA), says Marconi is rapidly expanding its optical portfolio by using its experience as the industry leader in European SDH networks.
"As the world`s service providers migrate their infrastructures towards all-optical networking, Marconi is providing them with the products, support and network expertise necessary to complete that transformation and be successful in today`s highly competitive environment," he says.
"Because all of our SmartPhotoniX products use common digital wrapper technology, carriers can create a single communications path from the metro access point to the backbone of the network. This enables service providers to add new services quickly across different network segments and to manage quality of service end-to-end."
The PLT80 and PMM are flexible, high-performance platforms that help carriers improve time to profitability by enabling the remote addition of new services to the network. The PLT80 offers an 80-channel line system for long haul optical transport, enabling the carrier to deliver information over fibre divided, through DWDM, into a maximum of 80 individual, discrete wavelengths, each with the transmission capacity of the original single fibre.
The PMM will provide a flexible, cost-effective platform for metropolitan applications, such as City-based fibre rings, where the ability to add and drop channels smoothly and efficiently is particularly important.
