Marconi Corporation plc has provided services to the DTI to help the UK government identify likely demand for the electronic delivery of public services and the role broadband aggregation can play in building broadband Britain across England.
The report, the first time such demand has been analysed in detail, will help inform the UK government`s strategy for the continuing evolution and adoption of broadband. Marconi consultants undertook a nationwide study that analysed likely demand for broadband services from all public sector institutions, including schools, hospitals and government departments. The data used to compile the report was collected and analysed using sophisticated geo-demographic modelling tools and Marconi`s extensive database of public sector, business and residential locations.
The report will enable expected future demand to be mapped against infrastructure availability to help identify, prioritise and target regional strategies based on levels of unfulfilled demand. This work will deliver the base information for development of intervention strategies now being pursued by the Regional and National Aggregation Boards.
"We all believe government has a central role to play in the broadband Britain debate," said Martin Harriman, Marconi`s chief marketing officer and a member of the Broadband Stakeholder Group. "Our work, however, will help test the concept using empirical research and quantify the role broadband aggregation stimulated by government can play. Broadband Britain has made fantastic progress over the last 12 months but there is still more progress to make," he said.
"This research will prove a valuable element in allowing for accurate forecasting of broadband services, enabling public sector organisations to pinpoint broadband investments in the most efficient, effective way possible," said Phil Hodge of the DTI`s Broadband Aggregation Project. The data will also provide excellent benchmark data that can be shared with both the national and various Regional Aggregation Bodies currently being set up across England. This initiative is a further, well directed shot in the arm for broadband Britain."
