Marconi introduces Ethernet-based enterprise voice solution

Johannesburg, 20 Jun 2001

Marconi has expanded the choices for enterprises to reduce network costs while adding advanced telephony applications by releasing an Ethernet version of its Sphericall Enterprise Voice over IP (VOIP) solution.

The solution, version 3.1, supports Ethernet-attached Sphericall managers, Ethernet gateways, branch office hubs with enhanced life-line support and additional softswitch features. It is now available in Ethernet or ATM media.

"The role of enterprise networks has evolved. Companies rely on them for competitive advantage and informed customer contact. Downtime, slow responses or obsolete information are unacceptable," says George Debbo, technical director of Marconi Communications South Africa.

"Sphericall gives enterprises a high-performance, reliable platform for voice and data services, as well as a simple-to-use tool for enabling the higher-value applications such as Web-based training, remote collaboration and interactive presentations that make the difference for increased profitability. It`s another example of Marconi`s drive to become a global leader of future telecommunications networks."

By using a softswitch to deliver the performance and features of traditional PBXs, Sphericall enables enterprises to simply integrate business software, multimedia applications and voice on a converged network. Further, the solution distributes advanced voice services uniformly across an enterprise`s many locations, uniting office-workers, telecommuters and mobile workers with IP address conservation, robust power distribution and quality of service (QOS) management for IP traffic as the solution expands.
