Marconi launches all-embracing portfolio for broadband access

Johannesburg, 17 Jan 2001

Marconi has launched a fully integrated suite of wireline and access products designed to extend bandwidth and intelligence deep into the `local loop` under a single unified management system.

The Total Access solution combines all three access technologies - optical , copper and wireless - to enable operators to deliver a comprehensive bundle of services. These range from simple voice telephony to high-speed multimedia services and constant internet access as well as both video-on-demand and broadcast video.

Koos Vorster, chief executive of Marconi Communications South Africa (MCSA), says the world`s core networks are already benefiting from the enormous increases in bandwidth delivered by advances in optical transmission and packet switching.

"The access layer - the local loop which links each customer with the nearest exchange - has become the last frontier preventing telcos from delivering the new generation of high bandwidth services their customers demand, and from earning the higher-value income streams those services can generate," he says.

"While the market remains unpredictable in terms of the precise mix of narrowband and broadband services customers will want, Marconi Total Access unites three essential technology platforms and enables operators to deploy all the access technologies they need to drive bandwidth and intelligence deep into the local loop."

The Marconi Total Access portfolio consists of five main components:

  • Marconi Deep Fiber - a suite of optical wireline solutions which extend optical networks close to, or directly into, individual homes and business premises.

  • Marconi Advanced Copper - leverages existing investment by providing an easy upgrade path for embedded copper lines and enables the rapid deployment of xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) services through a broad range of DSLAMs (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers).

  • Marconi Skyband - a suite of broadband point-to-multipoint and point-to-point wireless access products with the ability to deploy and deliver multimedia services rapidly and cost effectively.

  • Marconi Access Hub - a family of central hubbing nodes which aggregate broadband traffic from Deep Fiber, Advanced Copper and Skyband solutions and provide ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) edge switching, IP (Internet Protocol) layer 2 tunnelling and service management capabilities.

  • Marconi ServiceOn Access - a proven access solution that integrates element, network and service management into one scalable, future-proof network management system that dramatically reduces operating costs.

"Marconi Total Access is a prime example of the ways Marconi`s technology is transforming communications and redefining the way people work, play, learn and live," Vorster says.

Marconi plc is a global communications and IT company, with around 49,000 employees world-wide and sales in more than 100 countries. It supplies advanced communications solutions and the key technologies and services for the Internet. Marconi plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ under the symbol MONI.

Marconi Communications South Africa has about 1,000 staff with a factory in Springs and a sales office in Midrand.
