Marconi SA has been awarded an MTN Uganda contract to roll-out the first phase of the company`s transmission backbone. The contract is the first phase of a five-stage process and includes the roll-out of a fibre link between Kampala and Jinga, two of the country`s major trading centres.
The total value of the contract has not been announced and is dependent on the value of the subsequent phases.
The synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) link will be built using Marconi Multiplexes. Marconi SA marketing director Franklin Pieterse says the SDH technology will offer MTN a natural upgrade path as well as the option to expand into dense wavelength multiplexing technology.
"SDH is a vibrant and flexible technology, and will continue to be so for some time to come," says Pieterse.
Marconi`s SDH range includes data-handling capabilities through plug-in cards for ATM, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
"With this contract, Marconi SA is actively consolidating its African market position and remains optimistic of the emergent opportunities in the African telecoms sector," Pieterse says.
He admits that the company has had a rough ride over the past year but, following the recent financial restructuring, he is "extremely bullish" over its future.
