Marshal, Image Analyzer deliver porn-free e-mail

Johannesburg, 27 Jul 2006

Marshal and Image Analyzer have partnered in order to enable a porn filter to be added to the Marshal content filtering software suite. Available now as an add-on to Marshal`s flagship e-mail content filtering solution MailMarshal, the porn filter will help customers to meet complex security and regulatory compliance requirements and protect employees from offensive and inappropriate e-mails.

"E-mail is an essential business tool but it is also a vulnerability open to a range of threats that include spam, viruses, denial-of-service attacks and inappropriate and illegal content," says Riaan Otto, GM of 10Net ICT Solutions, local Marshal distributor. "Executives and employees face stiff legal consequences for inappropriate content filtering into their inboxes, while porn also has a negative impact on productivity."

A study conducted last year found that 50% of the largest US firms had instigated disciplinary procedures due to inappropriate or illicit images. Eight out of 10 Fortune 500 companies have dismissed staff for company Internet and e-mail resources misuse. 25% of UK businesses have dismissed staff for Internet misuse and more than two-thirds of cases involved pornography. Even police and law enforcement agencies in some countries have fired employees because they shared inappropriate and pornographic content. This is a problem that every business, educational institution and public service organisation faces daily.

Roughly 15% of all spam is pornographic. That represents a high risk for companies and executives.

Image Analyzer was launched in 2005. It is software that drives accurate image scans based on many colour-based and related algorithms.

"This solution provides an adequate legal defence and another layer of protection against spam," says Ed Macnair, CEO of Marshal.

"With the growth in DSL, mobile image capturing devices and mass storage devices, corporate organisations are now beginning to recognise the need for a real-time image analysis capability at gateway level. Marshal and Image Analyzer together provide an unbeatable solution in the war against porn," says Cris Pikes, CEO of Image Analyzer.

This new functionality will be available in MailMarshal SMTP 2006 and thereafter in MailMarshal Exchange and WebMarshal 2006.
