Masterskill introduces security certification

Johannesburg, 13 Aug 2002

Local training company Masterskill now offers Certified Program courseware to enable people to acquire specific security skills.

Masterskill points out that a recent survey by Information Security magazine found that almost half of the 2 500 companies surveyed were hit by a Web server attack last year. And even with anti-virus in place, viruses, worms and Trojan Horses infected 90% of these organisations.

This, says the company, illustrates the importance of keeping professionals up to date on security measures.

Masterskill MD Madeleine van Tonder says: "Enterprises today are spending a lot of money on defensive security technologies such as anti-virus software, intrusion detection systems and firewalls. But all this is in vain if security professionals are not well trained.

"As the business world demands qualified security professionals, we provide businesses with a method of verifying individuals` qualifications, and set a bar for network professionals to rise to security challenges in the ever-changing e-business world. Our Security Certified Program is designed to reposition IT professionals` skill sets from the defensive network security systems processes towards newer, more trusted methods."

Masterskill offers its security courseware through Element K, a provider of training solutions for IT and business skills. Encompassing two levels of certification - the Security Certified Network Professional (SCNP) and Security Certified Network Architect (SCNA) - the course is aimed at network professionals that are currently certified and want to progress beyond a vendor certification.

The SCNP certification focuses on defence-oriented security technology such as firewalls, intrusion detection, risk assessment and securing operating systems. SCNA concentrates on building an infrastructure for businesses, including encryption, authentication technology and Public Key Infrastructure.
