Maxtec sets sail with Perle Specialix in the MTN cape to Rio Race

Johannesburg, 06 Jan 2000

Maxtec Limited has been elected as the sole distributor for the broad range of Perle Specialix`s multi-user connectivity and remote access solutions in South Africa. Perle Specialix is the leading developer and manufacturer of products for e-business access. The agreement also heralds Maxtec`s entry into the AS/400 controller market, broadening the group`s reach outside the Intel / Unix market. Maxtec is the first distributor, internationally, to be awarded the distribution rights for both the Specialix and Perle product ranges.

"This strategic development is in line with Maxtec`s vision to provide a comprehensive service and product solution, from the conceptualisation, implementation and management to the support of the product, as e-commerce is perhaps the most significant driving force in storage," states Maxtec executive chairman George Talbot. "Our product offering will grow to include a broad range of high performance, multi-user and connectivity solutions designed for Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 95 and UNIX environments; as well as Specialix` Intelligent serial I/O controllers, terminal servers and remote access servers, which offer connectivity solutions for both Remote Access and WAN/ LAN services."

"We see South Africa as an important high-growth area, with the market stretching across industries, including large corporates and financial sector. Maxtec believes that with our products and expertise, Maxtec will be able to become a major player in this market," explains Perle Specialix EMEA sales director, Peter Graham.

The partnership entrusts Maxtec with a product and service offering renowned for reliability, high performance as well as competitive pricing. The agreement also ensures Maxtec, as well as their reseller chain and end-users, comprehensive training regarding the products.

Maxtec`s steady growth confirms that over the past decade the demand for storage has increased significantly, as modern applications with graphic intensive files and other complicated e-business software became more popular. "Maxtec has positioned itself as one of the leaders in digital data storage in South Africa, and we believe the synergies between the group and Specialix will lead to even more rapid penetration of the market," explains Talbot.

Perle Specialix products are available through a worldwide network of Original Engineering Manufacturers (OEMs), System Integrators, distributors, value-added resellers and dealers in over 70 countries. The group maintains close relationships with these partners, providing training and technical support. OEM relationships include some of the largest microcomputer manufacturers including Hewlett-Packard, Silicon Graphics and Philips.

With the same enthusiasm, Maxtec and Specialix have co-sponsored the Wizard, the South African Simonis 17 metre yacht, in the 2000 Cape to Rio Race, starting 8 January 2000.

"Maxtec has embarked on a marketing campaign to draw corporates` attention to the oncoming rush of information which new age communication devices will generate. The Wizard symbolizes state-of-the art solutions - without a proper data storage and management system, the unprepared will simply drown in a sea of information," motivates Talbot. "The crew boasts several Whitbread Round the World sailors, including skipper, Magnus Olsson and navigator, Lynn Beckley as well as Klabbe Nylof, all who were members of Team EF Language and its sister ship, EF Education.

Maxtec wanted to be certain that their significant sports partner was in tune with their business strategy, "Teamwork, dedication to getting the task done professionally, and performance were paramount. Employee and customer hospitality opportunities were equally important. "The fact that the team competes internationally and has first place achievers counts in the Wizard`s favour. It has the potential to be the first to sail into the Rio harbour," motivates Talbot.

The ultra-light Wizard is constructed from foam sandwich and has an aluminum space frame to hold the mast and rig and to tension the keel. Extensive ongoing design improvements have ensured that the Wizard has remained at the forefront of South African yachting events for almost a decade. Continual success on the waters has resulted in the yacht occupying a highly visible and respected position in the sailing fraternity.

The Cape to Rio race takes-off on the 6 / 8 January 2000 from Cape Town Harbour. You will be able to follow the progress of Wizard at www.sanscape.co.za.
