McAfee bug hits supermarket

Australian supermarket Behemoth Coles was hit by a McAfee bug that affected 10% of its point-of-sales (POS) terminals and forced it to shut down stores in both WA and South Australia, states ZDNet.

A McAfee update released this week caused computers using Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 3 to incorrectly identify a legitimate operating system component as containing a virus.

Affected computers experienced networking problems or repeated rebooting. McAfee has since removed the buggy update code from the company's servers.

ISS develops POS tech

Intelligent Security Systems (ISS), a developer of video management and image analytic software, has developed POS and licence plate recognition (LPR) solutions, says TMCnet.

These solutions are designed to support loss prevention in and outside convenience store chains and other facilities.

According to ISS, the combination of POS surveillance and LPR technology is ideal for retailers that must regularly deal with cash register 'shrinkage', merchandise theft, and gas drive offs.
