Mecer brand grabs lion`s share of government tender

Johannesburg, , 04 Jul 2000

Local computer manufacturer Mustek Ltd has been awarded a significant chunk of the government`s two-year RT222 IT hardware contract. The Mustek Group estimates that it will net R380 million from the contract over the next two years. As all Mecer systems will be supplied to government via Mustek`s empowerment implementation partners, this is also a coup for smaller enterprises.

Mustek will supply its Mecer entry-level desktop systems and notebook computers, as well as the Mecer 17- and 19-inch monitors. In addition it will supply government with the 3Com palmtop computer. Some larger systems, including servers, are still to be awarded.

"The Mecer range has high credibility with government, particularly because it has Microsoft PC99 certification by the Microsoft Hardware quality laboratory, and assembly standards adhere to the international ISO9000 quality control standard," says Mustek executive Willem Viviers.

Mustek was restricted from offering the Mecer brand in 6 of the 12 categories as these categories were defined according to Gartner Group ratings, which do not consider South African manufacturers. Viviers is confident that the Mecer brand will compare well with these imported units. "All machines offered in terms of the tender were subjected to rigorous testing by the government`s evaluation centers. Mecer proved its worth in terms of functionality, reliability and value for money" he said.
