The final decision as to how much each winning consortium in the Gauteng Online tender is to carry has been made. After weeks of negotiation Mecer, South Africa`s leading computer brand, has been awarded 110 schools out of an initial 500 schools, of which the rollout and installation has to be completed by January 2004. There after the remaining 1500 schools will be distributed to the consortiums that have successfully completed their initial installations.
Each school will be equipped with 25 networked machines. The consortiums are also responsible for educator training and technical support. Each educator will have access to 24 hours of basic computer training while an extra two educators from the school will be trained for an additional 24 hours.
The ambitious Gauteng Online project began two years ago and aims to provide 2000 public schools with 25 computers as well as internet access by 2006. The project will cost about R500 million to implement.
Mecer has featured very actively in the project since its inception, donating R2.5 million worth of computer equipment to schools during the project`s pilot phase. Mecer has also developed an impenetrable case for protecting the desktops once they are installed at the various sites.
Mecer manufactures and distributes the largest selling PC brand in SA for the past 12 years. It is a subsidiary of Mustek Limited. Mecer is a Proudly South African Company.
Mustek meets its objectives through strong relationships in the international information technology (IT) market, and continual nurturing of the entrepreneurial spirit of its people and business associates.
