Technology and management company MediKredit Integrated Solutions and smart card technology vendor On Track Innovations (OTI) Africa announced a pilot project last week for the introduction of OTI`s management application utilising its Eyecon dual interface smart card platform.

The pilot will be implemented in two phases, with phase one involving pharmacies in the second quarter, followed by general practitioner practices in phase two in the third quarter.

"In introducing the OTI Medical Management application, the patient will be authenticated by way of an offline verification of the biometric information stored on the card against the relevant biometric information of the holder of the card," says Dr Henry Muller, marketing manager, OTI Africa`s medical management application.

"Moreover, the benefits to which the patient is entitled will be verified without the need to go online. The implementation of smart card technology will ensure that are reduced in a cost-effective manner at service provider level," he says.

OTI`s Eyecon technology is a microprocessor-based solution providing customers with a multi-application platform with a full operating system on board. OTI says it is the only company that can offer a combination card where contact and contactless features use the same microprocessor and share the same operating system.

MediKredit`s HealthNet Superior Technology offers online claims processing of prescriptions in pharmacies and dispensing GP practices.
