MegaWeb Internet Services launches ADSL Internet connectivity

Johannesburg, 11 Jun 2003

ADSL offers many advantages over conventional connectivity options, with speed being the most obvious of these, 512K upstream from exchange to user and 256K downstream from user to exchange.

However, ADSL`s biggest rival in the marketplace is leased-lines, as both technologies are known as "always-on" connectivity options. This means that there is no need to constantly dial-up to establish a connection to the Internet.

The most obvious advantage of ADSL over leased-lines is of course the price, ADSL being about half the price of a leased-line. Another is the fact that you can use a telephone and your ADSL connection simultaneously on a single line. Also you won`t need to have a digital line installed, as ADSL uses the same copper cables that conventional telephones use.

Although ADSL also has certain disadvantages over leased-lines, MegaWeb believes that ADSL can be a cost-effective alternative to leased-lines for most applications, an example would be where users find that conventional connectivity options no longer meet their needs, and leased-lines are too costly.
