MegaWeb last week announced the release of its custom-built spam-blocking system, which complements its anti-virus protection system that has been a valued value-added service for the past two years. The Spamblock system will be available to all clients that have Pop3 e-mail services with MegaWeb.
The MegaWeb Spamblocker prevents "spammer-friendly" mail servers, as well as specific e-mail addresses from sending to MegaWeb`s e-mail users. Where spam is received on a regular basis from a certain mail server, the mailserver will be blocked. In some cases only the e-mail address will be blocked and the ISP is contacted to take action against the offender.
Kenneth Botha, Technical Manager at MegaWeb, says MegaWeb`s e-mail services have always been reliable due to a 99.8% average server uptime, resulting in no delays in the delivery of e-mail messages with an anti-virus system that prevents 80% to 90% of viruses from reaching clients` mailboxes. He added that unnecessarily large amounts of unsolicited mail have, however, been a cause of frustration to clients and administrators alike.
"We have found that existing solutions provided by other spam blocking systems no longer met our clients` requirements and have therefore decided to implement our own system, which will provide greater flexibility and control."
MegaWeb e-mail users were informed about this new service and asked to send the headers of offending e-mail messages to MegaWeb in order for the senders` e-mail address/mail server to be blocked from sending further unsolicited mail to the MegaWeb mail servers. Botha and his team have already reported a highly positive response from users in this regard, as more than 10% of previously delivered messages seem to have been unsolicited.
