Metrofile Pretoria in R3.8m merger, consolidation

Johannesburg, 06 Jun 2006

Metrofile has embarked on a R3.8 million consolidation and expansion exercise in Pretoria, merging its conversion centre in Monument Park with its Roseville storage operation where the new centre will be located. The existing Roseville vault will be doubled in size, to cater for secure storage of microfilm.

"We are bringing the teams together for the obvious efficiency and cost gains but also to cater to the growing demand we are experiencing in the area, particularly due to recently developed government business," says Mike Morris, divisional director at Metrofile in Pretoria.

The new centre improves workflow and productivity by merging the scanning conversion and storage disciplines under one roof. This brings scanning, filming and other conversion processes together to improve overall workflow.

The first phase of the merger operation was completed by mid-April and phase two is expected to be complete by mid-June.

Phase one saw the administration department move its entire division up one floor to make room for operations.

"With the previous administration environment freed up, the builders can get in to make the alterations, which is phase two," says Morris. "They are gutting the building and will then install the processing infrastructure."

Once that is complete, all the machinery from the Monument Park facility will be moved across, which includes microfilm creation, digital capturing and storage and analogue and paper storage.

The project has taken six months, with rain interrupting building between November 2005 and April.

The increased vault storage capacity will cater for existing microfilm and new business. It previously stored only digital data devices. The next closest vault is in Cleveland in Johannesburg, and both are built to exacting South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) specifications.

The current lease at Monument Park will lapse on completion of the expanded facility at Roseville.

"We are looking forward to completing this new phase in the region and taking advantage of the opportunities in the public sector," says Morris.
