Comparex Africa Networks, the networking division of Comparex Africa, recently completed the upgrade of Metropolitan`s national WAN backbone. The new Nortel Passport equipment provides Metropolitan with a more resilient infrastructure. The new backbone is also technically ready to take advantage of future developments such as the convergence of voice over the backbone.

The contract involved replacing outdated equipment with Nortel Passport 6400 switches, which couple routing and switching capability on one platform, enabling Metropolitan to consolidate the existing frame relay traffic with voice traffic in the future, efficiently and cost-effectively.

The new infrastructure involved replacing the WAN node infrastructure in Metropolitan`s seven major centres - Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, PE and Windhoek. This network allows all the branches throughout SA to connect to their closest node and be immediately routed to the head office in Cape Town to access policy information.
