MGE UPS Systems, the power solutions company, ensured the availability of electrical energy for critical applications for the entire Athens Games.
MGE was selected by the 'Organising Committee for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games SA` following an international call for tenders. MGE is distributed and supported in SA by IT and communications systems distributor Comztek.
Rodney Callaghan, managing director of MGE UPS Systems South Africa, says MGE provided 1 719 UPSs and service teams to ensure the continuous operation of equipment in numerous centres and installations during the event.
"The supported applications included telecommunications, press, timing, display as well as anti-doping, etc. A total of 60 venues (competition and other installations) were protected from possible power outages or disturbances that could have disrupted the Games. The contract was valued at 1.9 million euros," he says.
Dominique de Gelis, MGE UPS Systems vice-president for Europe and International, says: "We are highly satisfied with the results of this project. It was gratifying to work for the Games and to see the entire job go off without a hitch.
"Our comprehensive, proactive approach, combining the reliability of our UPSs with supervision solutions and the availability of our emergency-servicing experts, proved to be highly effective."
The solutions deployed by MGE UPS Systems included the single-phase and three-phase double-conversion Pulsar EXtreme C, Pulsar EXtreme, Comet EXtreme, Comet, Galaxy 3000 and Galaxy ranges.
Included were remote supervision systems capable of sending alerts via e-mail and SMS in the event of anomalies and guaranteed servicing by MGE PowerServices experts within one hour.
