MGX FutureWorks develops salaries solution for FNB Peoplelink

Johannesburg, 07 May 2001

MGX FutureWorks, a Microsoft Solution Provider focused on custom-developing software for financial services organisations, has created a journal link solution to automate the manual salary adjustment procedures and corresponding general ledger journals for First National (FNB) Peoplelink.

FNB has more than 6 000 staff members conducting personal interactions with the organisation over the corporate intranet, making it one of the world`s leading users of employee self service applications.

FNB views employee self service as a key e-business application as it improves quality, streamlines HR functions and removes paper, thus incurring significant cost savings in personnel administration and time.

"We have already taken our employee self-service intranet development further than any other organisation in the country," says FNB Peoplelink CEO, Edgar Blomeyer. "The FutureWorks salary solution adds further functionality to the application."

MGX FutureWorks provided an online capture facility which runs on Internet Explorer for easy deployment. This validates the data before storing it in Microsoft SQL Server. The database is used to automate the production of general ledger journals and deposit instructions in a secure environment with all necessary approvals and controls. It maintains records such as the Branch Automation and SUBS book and provides for general management reporting and online enquiries. The middle-tier business logic was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic and ASP, which will generate the HTML for the Web client user interface.

"The system was designed to handle around 30 concurrent users and capture 30 000 individual transactions per month, with a peak workload in the first five days following the salary run," says Paul Mar'e, GM of MGX FutureWorks.

"Our users have benefited from the security, reporting and enquiry features provided by the solution," notes Blomeyer. "Users have also reported that it is a major time saver. We believed the MGX FutureWorks team was the best qualified to programme the system, and Peoplelink has been most impressed with the company`s professionalism, attention to detail and commitment to the development of a user-friendly solution that meets the requirements of the project."

FNB PeopleLink initially approached Microsoft SA and asked it to recommend Microsoft Solution Providers which would be able to meet our needs," says Blomeyer. "We awarded the contract to MGX FutureWorks on the basis that the company is Microsoft-recommended, and follows Microsoft`s system development procedures."

Blomeyer adds that MGX FutureWorks has carried out a number of projects for financial services companies and that the project team was able to understand Peoplelink`s requirements and suggest a number of feasible options for development. "Aside from suggesting a number of cost-saving solutions for Peoplelink, the MGX FutureWorks team was also prepared to work around very tight deadlines that meant overtime for its staff. We were provided with a team that was dedicated solely to the journal link project, and we continue to have ongoing support on a time and materials basis."
