Micromuse uses Netcool solutions to gain BS 7799 information security management certification

Company relies on own internal deployment of the Netcool suite to meet British standards compliance requirements

Johannesburg, 02 Sept 2004

Micromuse Inc, the leading provider of ultra-scalable, real-time business and service assurance software today announced that it has been certified by Det Norske Veritas, an independent third-party accreditation body, as meeting the requirements of British Standards 7799 (BS 7799), a worldwide standard specifically aimed at information security management.

BS 7799 is designed to be the single source for identifying governance and providing best practices for companies of all sizes where information systems are used in the course of conducting business. To obtain this certification, Micromuse relied heavily on its own internal deployment of the Netcool software suite for transaction assurance, accuracy, and governance of business systems. The Netcool suite allowed Micromuse to identify business-critical applications and to alert relevant personnel immediately about any issues impacting those applications, the devices that support them, or their connectivity throughout the enterprise.

As a result, Micromuse demonstrated how Netcool solutions enable IT staff to immediately respond to outages and revert to failover and resiliency procedures, enabling business continuity and ensuring adherence with their customer`s service level agreements.

"Information has now become a company`s most valuable asset; business transaction assurance, data integrity and system assurance are key components to maintaining the value of that information," said Lloyd Carney, Micromuse`s Chairman and CEO. "The BS 7799 Information Security Management standard demonstrates that Micromuse`s Netcool suite of products is uniquely capable of providing the audit tools required to ensure the availability and integrity of key critical systems."

Micromuse is the first ever organisation to use its own product to demonstrate and apply the compliance practices defined by BS 7799. The BS 7799 certification complements Micromuse`s BS 15000 and ISO 9001 accreditations and recognises the company`s commitment to excellence in quality management, IT service management, and security management. The Netcool suite is configured to automatically alert Micromuse`s business, IT and security personnel responsible for any given asset based upon predetermined thresholds to quickly react to and correct any situation.

The BS 7799 standard for Information Security Management describes an integrated set of management principles and processes for the secure delivery of services to the business and its customers. The standard requires organisations to comply with consistent criteria in the development and evaluation of internal security policies, organisational security, asset classification and control, personnel, physical and environmental security, communications and operational management and business continuity.
