Microsoft chooses Artec

Johannesburg, 27 Sep 2002

Artec Computer Systems today announced that it had been chosen by Microsoft to be the partner that will feature its winning case study in Microsoft`s Small Business Server marketing strategy events that will take place nationwide over the coming weeks.

Microsoft is stepping-up its relations with small and medium enterprises and will run customer programmes that will deliver true value to these organisations but also focus on various lines of business to ensure that they deliver meaningful advice and information. In this regard, Microsoft`s partners were invited to submit a case study from one of their clients that encompassed a Microsoft solution for the small and medium business (SMB) market.

In response to this, Artec Computer Systems submitted a case study on its implementation of a SBS 2000 solution at Papersmith and Son, an upper echelon paper merchant that imports and supplies exclusive papers.

"We reached a stage where our business needed an electronic messaging system with advanced calendar functionality that would not jeopardise the performance of their financial system," commented Jo Haden-Smith, Managing Director of Papersmith. "We turned to Artec to assist us in finding such a solution that didn`t compromise our existing hardware investment."

Papersmith and Son needed the collaboration tools associated with Exchange, but could not justify the expense associated with upgrading desktops to meet the recommended minimum system requirements to send and receive e-mail on the same day. In addition to this, whatever solution was proposed had to incorporate the company`s DOS-based financial system, as well as allow seamless access to users in Cape Town and Durban.

The decision was made to deploy SBS 2000 through a MS Terminal Server connection, which had the following solution benefits:

* Reduced costs associated with Terminal Server licences when compared to hardware upgrades;

* Simple and fast access to MS Exchange along with the collaboration functionality for local and remote users; and

* Ability for multiple users to access the DOS-based financial system hosted on a Windows 2000 server and thus avoiding the risk of freezing through pre-emptive tasking.

"We are justifiably proud of being chosen by Microsoft to be their partner in these SMB-oriented events," said Andrew Tucker, Founder and CEO of Artec Computer Systems. "We are also delighted that through these activities, we will be also able to positively enhance the image of Papersmith, one of our most important clients."
