Microsoft focuses on public sector

Johannesburg, 31 Aug 2004

With government`s to improve delivery via ICT, technology companies are scrambling for a piece of the public sector ICT spend. Microsoft has been no exception.

The company`s public sector and director, Moss Gondwe, says Microsoft internationally shares the same strategy for the public sector, but locally it has identified a great deal of potential in the healthcare and education sub-sectors.

"Through our partnership with SITA [the State IT Agency], we are getting more and more involved in its delivery of services to the general public," he says.

This also allows the software giant to get involved with a number of government social responsibility initiatives, which include the likes of Blue IQ and GautengOnline.

Gondwe believes the South African government differs from the others that Microsoft deals with because it comes with a certain element of thought leadership.

"Looking at the South African government right now, it is obvious to see it is comparatively new and this makes it easier for it to adopt new solutions," he adds.

Gondwe says the diversity of the needs of the local population makes dealing with the government even more interesting.

He notes, however, that Microsoft needs to communicate its value proposition better as it strives to get more business from government.
