Microsoft, i-mate celebrate accelerated growth of Windows Mobile

44% year on year growth rate of worldwide total smart mobile device market
By Cameo Corporate Communications
Johannesburg, 13 May 2005

Microsoft`s Windows Mobile`s market share of smart mobile devices rose 44% year on year from Q1 2004 (18.3%) to Q1 2005 (23.1%).

Against this backdrop, Jim Morrison, founder and CEO of i-mate, the worldwide leader in Windows Mobile-powered handsets and wireless solutions, met with Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. i-mate solutions, distributed in SA by Leaf Wireless, run exclusively on Windows Mobile.

The relationship with Microsoft extends back to the inception of i-mate in 2001 when the company launched its first smartphone. Today, i-mate has a range of smartphones and PDAs as well as a unique offering of customisable end-to-end solutions and online technical support.

Quinton Leigh, Managing Director of Leaf Wireless, said: "The ubiquity of the Microsoft Windows platform in the business arena made it i-mate`s obvious choice for a wireless workplace communications solution. While working closely with Microsoft developing and building the technology behind i-mate, they took advantage of the ease of use of the Windows Mobile platform to create products that suited both business and personal needs of the end-user. We are very pleased to be able to offer i-mate`s comprehensive range of solutions to the South African market."

Morrison and Ballmer were in Dubai, operational headquarters of i-mate, for the Microsoft Government Leaders Forum - Arabia. i-mate will also sponsor the upcoming Microsoft Windows Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference being held in Las Vegas, Nevada from 10 to 12 May. i-mate established itself in North America with the launch of its San Diego operations at the CTIA Wireless show in March 2005.
