Microsoft to miss its '1bn by 2018' Windows 10 target

Microsoft has admitted that it will miss its target of 1 billion devices running on its Windows 10 operating system by 2018.

At present, Microsoft said, the operating system is in use on about 350 million devices.

Adoption rates of Windows 10 are likely to slow after the company's free upgrade offer ends on 29 July, and users will need to pay $119 (about R1 700) to adopt the new operating system.

Microsoft has attracted criticism for aggressively pushing the free upgrade, and failing to recognise numerous users' reasons for choosing not to switch operating systems, for example running incompatible hardware or .

The ICT giant cited difficulties with its smartphone business as a prominent reason for the delay in reaching its Windows 10 target, as its smartphones struggle in a market dominated by Apple and Android devices.
