Data security company MicroWorld announced recently that it has steadily been gaining market share in Africa and Middle East with its unique, feature-rich, easy-to-use and cost-effective anti-virus and content security software solutions, namely eScan and MailScan for corporate and enterprise customers.
The company has been successful at getting clients to replace other competing branded anti-virus products. Current customers around the country include the Ministries of Rural Affairs and Culture & Information, Durban Electricity, Lesotho Computer Department, Port Elizabeth College, and the ISP @lantic Internet Services.
From the receptionist to the CEO in an organisation, almost everybody in the work environment has Internet access today and this opens the door to numerous security threats.
Employees are typically not knowledgeable enough technically to understand what is good and bad for them and the network which presents an ongoing security management problem. It is not uncommon, for example, for a user to see an attractive advertisement on their PC screen, and by clicking on it, unwittingly send out their e-mail ID, which in turn comes back as spam.
In this way, a user who receives a screensaver of over 1MB size can typically end up forwarding it to 10 other users within or outside the network, in so doing choking their company`s bandwidth. Users very often also download shareware programs from unknown Web sites, only to discover at a later date that they turn out to be riskware, spyware, adware, keyloggers or pornographic dialler programs.
All of this uncontrolled flow of data results in spam, pop-up advertisements, unwanted attachments, unwanted Web surfing, unwanted streaming audio and video, stealing of user information and the filling up of hard disk space with unwanted files, thus slowing down computers and the network. These are very common problems faced by corporate and enterprise clients and IT administrators are very often simply running from pillar to post just to keep pace with the ever-increasing security threats.
"The key to our success has been to offer the complete anti-virus and content security solutions which IT administrators demand so that they can easily configure and implement security policies for all the users within the network and have total control over data flowing in and out of the organisation," comments Nazir Kazi, Assistant General Manager at MicroWorld. "We are a technology company and develop products that are flexible and scalable to meet different security needs of clients. We understand that every company has different security needs in terms of controlling attachments, e-mails and Web access so that they can have a safe network and better business continuity."
