Migration to Fast Ethernet easy with new hubs

Broadening its range of LAN solutions for small to medium businesses, SMC Networks has introduced two new hubs aimed at existing Fast Ethernet users or those migrating from a legacy topology.

The devices - part of the EZ Hub 100 family and ready to ship next month - are coming to market with some of the lowest costs per port available, says Greg Perkins, country manager at SMC SA. "It`s possible to have 100 Mbps connectivity for as little as R180 [SRP] per port."

From a dedicated Fast Ethernet hub standpoint, one of the new device lines augments SMC`s existing 8-port offering with 4- and 24-port choices.

The smaller device should find favour among small workgroups or server farms - its plug-and-play installation procedures a boon in that market. The hub is also cascadable, therefore capable of handling workgroup or server farm growth.

The 24-port model features an integrated 100BASE-TX or -FX switch module, making it suitable for offering full duplex (200Mbps) long distance fibre links in the remote backup or storage area networking arena. In addition, the hub can connect to a fibre network backbone, a simple switch, a file server or a legacy 10Mbps network, thereby preserving existing investments.

For those companies looking at moving up from the Ethernet topology, the other new SMC product line comprises 12- and 24-port dual speed hubs.

An internal integrated switch allows 10Mbps or 100Mbps devices to be connected to any port, with the speed of those devices automatically determined and the traffic segmented accordingly. These class II hubs can also be cascaded to support additional users.
