The high profile failure of an ISP's infrastructure used for the hosted exchange platform last week highlighted the risks of complex e-mail architectures both on-premise and virtual, even when implemented to a high standard of reliability.
In addition, it demonstrated the importance of understanding the level of e-mail continuity and support a customer can expect from a provider. “Email has become too important to businesses to allow a single point of failure to disrupt hours of messaging,” says Garth Wittles, managing director of e-mail management specialist, Mimecast South Africa. “The onus sits equally with the customer to ensure e-mail continuity is supported by their service provider.”
“The smooth running of an entire company or set of companies' e-mail cannot be left to one server, point of presence or connection to the corporate network. True e-mail continuity extends beyond the boundaries of the network,” says Wittles.
A number of hosted Exchange customers are using Mimecast's cloud-based service to address e-mail continuity concerns with 100% availability and provide peace of mind at minimal investment.
Mimecast Email Continuity is a cloud-based service that gives end-users access to their live e-mail when their normal e-mail service is offline for any reason. Mimecast services run from a resilient network of geographically dispersed data centres so that 100% e-mail availability is guaranteed, even during outages.
“Our customer experience department contacted many of our hosted exchange customers on Monday and found they were aware, but not affected by the outage. The Mimecast service ensured that e-mail delivery was not affected,” says Wittles.
“We understand the irritation as well as the real business impact of an e-mail outage. As even top-notch service providers have major incidents, we want to extend an offer to all customers affected by the hosted exchange outage a six month's free subscription to Mimecast UEM Express,” says Wittles.
Mimecast UEM Express offers full e-mail continuity, security and archiving of e-mail messages up to 58 days with the benefits of e-mail branding.
“It will provide a sense of how easy it can be to have another safe pair of hands to ensure e-mail never goes down again,” concludes Wittles.
