Communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri met for the first time yesterday with the newly-selected members of the board for the .za Domain Name Authority.

The members of the board were selected by a panel that comprised of Mike Lawrie (the current .za domain name administrator), Zodwa Manase, Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane and Ryk Meiring.

The minister announced the board at the Department of Communications` budget speech in Parliament in September. The nine-member board is chaired by Hashmukh Gajjar and the other members are Preeta Bhagattjee, Sonwabo Eddi Funde, Richard Heath, Xoliswa Kakana, Alan Levin, Michael Silber and Victor Wilson.

According to a statement issued by the department today, Matsepe-Casaburri met the board in Pretoria and briefed members on key national priorities and the demands of the international community. She also referred to the board`s role and powers in terms of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act that will guide the work of the authority.

Board member Alan Levin told ITWeb: "The meeting proved to be an effective team-building exercise."

Wednesday`s meeting was the first official meeting of the board members and this will be followed up by a workshop in about three weeks.

The department set up the .za Domain Name Authority to ensure the transfer of the domain name from its current administrator, Mike Lawrie, to the country`s control.

According to the latest statement from the department: "The meeting reflected the commitment of all present to strengthen the good relations between the Department of Communications and the .za Domain Name administration, and to participate in processes leading to the World Summit on the Information Society declaration."
