Security is a number-one concern for any financial institution. This applies externally, but has even greater applicability inside the organisation, due to the confidential nature of information being shared. In line with this philosophy, Mint was recently appointed by a leading financial institution to develop a secure Intranet for the entire organisation. The preservation of security was a critical priority, and thus it made sense to use the user`s network login details for security on the Intranet also.
This meant deploying a single sign-on solution, in that users are not required to login specifically to the Intranet - once they have logged into the network, they will have access to all information relevant to them.
Companies often underestimate the need for security on an intranet. There are two levels of security required. One is for the staff as they should not have access to all the information on the intranet. There may be sensitive information that should be restricted to one division or to a level of management. The second requirement is to protect the site from external access.
Grant Hodgkinson, sales and marketing director at Mint, commented, "We provided a single sign-on to the intranet. We used this information to decide on which information would be provided to the user."
It was particularly rewarding for Mint to be awarded this project, as it was based on the success of a previous project. The customer had previously contracted Mint to develop their web site. Mint had used Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) as the platform for the web site. Once the customer had seen the capabilities of MCMS, and the highly skilled competence of the Mint staff, they awarded the intranet project to Mint.
Content Management Server was an ideal fit for the requirement, since the primary need of the organisation was the representation of content in a browser standard, with a secondary requirement being the ability to store information in documents. The MCMS platform automatically provides for the ability to manage the site navigation system and the security system. Mint was then able to focus on the core of delivering an application that matched the content management processes within the institution, rather than having to look at creating a platform first.
The Intranet is based on the same platform as the Internet site, which means that users will not have to be trained for each application separately. Also, the administration and maintenance of both applications is similar, meaning a lower ongoing cost in running both systems.
Mint helps their customers become more productive and reduce costs in their businesses. Their solution focus is in the area of consulting and development for collaboration, content management, knowledge management, document management and workflow, delivered through portal technologies. Mint is a Johannesburg-based Microsoft Certified Partner and a member of Microsoft`s Seattle-based Partner Advisory Council for Collaboration and Portals.
