Mitel Networks targets South African market

Johannesburg, 08 Mar 2002

Mitel Networks Limited, a leading-edge provider of next-generation IP communications solutions focusing on the integration of voice, video and data, has opened an office in South Africa. The company sees South Africa as a strategic market as well as an ideal location for the company`s drive into the African continent. The office will be headed up by Andy Bull, formerly director of Alcatel Broadband Networking Division for Africa.

Mitel Network`s competitive advantage stems from the fact the company has a new set of multimedia platforms supporting converged voice, video and data solutions for enterprises.

"The company strategy is to provide our customers with the tools that allow them to maximise their investment in Information Technology and covers three key areas," says Bull.

The first of these are a range of integrated communications platforms that use IP to facilitate the integration of voice and data at the desktop. Bull says South Africa is a renowned financial centre and has businesses in a number of vertical markets that would benefit from the introduction of the company`s IP based solutions.

The second area of focus is an evolution of the Application Service Provider (ASP) model known as the Application Management Centre.

Bull says the reason the take up on the ASP model worldwide has not been as high as expected, is customers have not been comfortable with storing their data on a third parties site.

"The Application Management Centre (AMC) concept solves this problem as the server and data now reside on the customer`s premises but are managed from a central AMC alleviating the need for IT skills within the customer environment," says Bull.

The third area of focus is IP based applications offering security, healthcare, e-learning and video solutions.

The requirements of the South African and African markets will be addressed in partnership with local VAR`s and Service Providers.

Mitel Networks, pioneers in the development of the digital PABX, were re-acquired in February last year by its original founder Sir Terence Matthews, one of Canada`s most successful high-tech entrepreneurs and a recognised industry visionary.
