MOL, a leading global multi-modal transport provider which operates over 100 of the world`s largest and fastest container ships, has implemented Domino supplied by TCM.
"Domino is being used to manage our e-mails as well as manage information on company policies, procedures and `How To` educational documents," explained MOL South Africa IT manager David Bosa.
"We have also implemented an intelligent standard forms service for employees. This allows staff to access forms such as leave application or sick leave forms," he explained.
"Domino Mail provides a unified architecture for e-mail, Web access, online calendaring and group scheduling, collaborative workspaces, bulletin boards and newsgroups. It provides mobile capabilities and support for the widest array of clients, from Lotus Notes clients to Web browsers to Outlook and PDAs giving users secure messaging anytime, anywhere," explained TCM marketing executive Jorge de Campos.
Domino Mail runs on an integrated IBM eServer (iSeries), and interoperates seamlessly with other messaging systems via open standards. Centralised desktop control, message tracking and monitoring and remote server management enable consistent IT support for field offices, further reducing cost of ownership. Optimised add-on products, like desktop fax and integrated document management, make it easy to add value and extend your messaging infrastructure.
"MOL chose the IBM eServer (iSeries) platform based on its reliability and stability," said Bosa.
Initially, MOL ran Domino on an Intel platform, but opted to move to the iSeries and have enjoyed tremendous stability and reliability. Since moving to the iSeries, we have had no problems in terms of the iSeries system availability," noted Bosa.
A recent IDC white paper on total cost of ownership found that over a three-year period the iSeries showed a 34% cost advantage over Intel platform systems. In a five-year evaluation, the iSeries cost-advantages grew to 95% for small companies. The study concluded that the iSeries provides significant productivity savings as a function of its reliability. The IDC results also revealed a 16-fold reduction in user downtime over comparable Intel-based servers.
