Satellite Data Networks (SDN) suffered a massive network outage yesterday following a purported malfunction of its backup generator during a power failure in Rosebank.
This outage follows a problematic patch for first-tier Internet service providers (ISPs), with Internet Solutions suffering the loss of its links to New York following the World Trade Centre disaster. SDN was spared that fate through its 45Mbps line to Digex, but was not saved from the local power outage.
ITWeb recorded the SDN outage at approximately 12:20pm yesterday, with the ISP only regaining its link at about 3pm. SDN customers reported outages of between one and two hours.
One SDN customer told ITWeb that this is the second time that SDN has claimed the same problem for downtime, while another was told that Telkom's ATM backbone went down due to the power failure.
"It doesn't matter whom you're with - every network has its own share of problems," says a third-tier ISP MD that used to use SDN and is now with SAIX. "If it's not planes flying into the World Trade Centre, it's something else."
The Johannesburg electricity head office has no record of a power failure in the Rosebank area in the last 48 hours.
SDN was reluctant to comment to the press regarding the network failure.
