More power to Ethernet in the pipeline

With moves afoot to increase the power available through the Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard from the current 12.95 watts to more than 30 watts, Duxbury Networking, in association with its principal PowerDsine, has announced the availability of beta versions of a new product designed to deliver more power to networks in the near future.

Graham Duxbury, MD of Duxbury Networking, says the IEEE has formed the Power over Ethernet Plus Study Group to look at increasing the electrical power that can be transmitted over Ethernet twisted pair wires.

"This is to support new generation support IP phones, video phones, biometric access controls, RFID readers, higher-speed wireless access points, point-of-sale and other devices which require more than the current standard suggests," he says.

He highlights pan-tilt-zoom networked cameras, which take more than 20 watts of power, as a prime application for the new PowerDsine offering - the 8001 High-power PoE (HighPoE) Midspan.

"Another is the video phone, which typically requires about 25 watts of power. These devices are both becoming increasingly widespread in organisations that place a heavy emphasis on security," he says.

The PowerDsine 8001 Midspan is expected to be a one-port device which connects to an Ethernet switch or hub and then adds up to 39 watts of power over a single Ethernet link.

PowerDsine is an active member of the IEEE`s Power over Ethernet Plus Study Group, formed to ratify a more powerful PoE standard.
