More to consumables than meets the eye

Johannesburg, 06 Mar 1998

The most common reason for disappointing results from today's wide range of PC printers is incorrect selection of output media, inks and toners. So says Shane Tyrrell, consumables product manager at technology distributor Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), who adds that there's a common misconception that printer consumables are interchangeable and that any paper, ink or toner can be used as successfully with any brand of printer."However, for the best results from a printer brand, you must use that brand's output media. This is because the inks and toners recommended by the different printer vendors each have a unique chemical composition which can be acidic or alkali. This is taken into account in the manufacture of the output media designed for each printer brand to ensure users obtain the best possible output from that printer," Tyrrell explains."In addition, the various printer vendors produce output media designed to bring out the best in their printer technologies. For example, Epson offers a range of papers, including self-adhesive paper and pre-cut 4 x 6-inch glossy photo paper which was developed specifically for its leading-edge 14 400 dpi printer technology."Quality compatible media products like SDD's housebrand, Performa, give slightly lower standard output results because they are developed with a neutral chemical composition to enable them to be used with the widest range of printer brands available. The full range of Epson, HP, Canon and Performa consumables will be displayed and demonstrated at the SDD Technology Showcase - the first exhibition of its kind and magnitude in South Africa. The Technology Showcase kicked off in Bloemfontein on March 4 and moves through Port Elizabeth, East London, Midrand, Durban, Nelspruit, and Pietersburg before ending in Cape Town on April 23.
