Black-empowered JSE-listed Morvest Business Group recently launched its eagerly awaited entry into Nigeria, with a function at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, in Lagos, in June 2011.
The event was designed to serve as a mini-showcase of Morvest's diverse product and services range, and provided a unique opportunity for the South African group to introduce its offering to the Nigerian energy and telecommunications sectors.
Speaking at the event, CEO Mohammed Varachia described Morvest as the answer to the technology gap that continually inhibits African businesses from competing in international markets.
With a staff complement of over 2 000 across Africa, Morvest services various businesses and governments across Africa - particularly in professional services (spanning training and consulting), ICT and technology outsourcing.
The group has had a presence in Nigeria since 2005, having invested over $10 million dollars to date - mainly through Premium Ideas Nigeria and the recently registered INGR Technologies. Premium Ideas is a specialist packaging, fulfilment and secure print services company, and INGR Technologies is the Nigerian distribution company for Intergraph - the world's largest provider of engineering enterprise software.
Varachia adds that Morvest intends substantially increasing its Nigerian investment particularly in infrastructure and manpower development, as well as through strategic acquisitions and partnering with strategic local Nigerian companies. “Our vision is essentially to use our business operations in Africa to transfer technology with a view to bridging the technology gap currently plaguing African businesses.”
Morvest recently appointed Fabian Ajogwu SAN (Senior Advocates of Nigeria) as chairman of its business operations in Nigeria - Morvest Business Group Nigeria. Ajogwu is founder and Fellow of the Society for Corporate Governance Nigeria, a Fellow and council member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Nigeria, a director and member of the Lagos Court of Arbitration, a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, and a Fellow of the Centre for Commercial Law Development. He also serves on the Council of Legal Education (Nigeria Law School) and the Governing Council of the Pan-African University.
Other speakers at the event included the managing directors of the different subsidiaries within the group, and heads of the company's local partners in Nigeria.
The Lagos event will shortly be followed with a similar event in Abuja.
