Most good monitors will outlast the PC

Johannesburg, 14 Sept 2000

Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), a member of the JSE-listed Siltek group of companies, has announced the new Philips 150P and 150B range of monitors to the local channel, a range that reflects the reality that most good monitors will outlast the PC they are connected to.

The 15-inch LCD monitors that form part of the Brilliance product line feature an intelligent display with a new interface and dual /analogue signal inputs. The two models cater to the business and professional users in the market.

Steven Kramer, Philips Business Unit Manager at SDD, says, "The two input options enable the new monitors to connect to a wide variety of PCs, including those using a new digital standard planned for the future.

Kramer says the average life-span of a monitor is currently around five years while most PCs survive only half as long before being upgraded. Today, nearly all LCD monitors are designed to translate analogue signals from computer's VGA display card into the digital input required internally by the flat panels. The emergence of and growing market acceptance of the Digital Video Interface (DVI) standard for PC digital output has changed that.

"These new Philips monitors provide the capability to switch between digital and analogue input so as to provide customers with a form of insurance against the rapid change in standards," says Kramer. The Brilliance 150P and 150B also come with built-in front firing speakers and microphones for multimedia tasks. Since they are integrated into the monitor, the speakers do not take extra desktop space and still keep the monitor as slim as others.

The monitors deliver the shortest depth in their respective classes plus brighter, solid images with perfect geometry for clear text and numbers along with flicker-free performance to reduce eyestrain and increase productivity. "All models make the monitor fine-tuning easy with an intelligent interface that guides users through display adjustments," adds Kramer.
