Motorola expands Zain Nigeria network

Johannesburg, 08 Feb 2010

Motorola has signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Zain Nigeria to expand the coverage, capacity, and quality of the operator's GSM .

A Zain Nigeria statement says the network upgrade will enable the telco to provide network services to rural customers that previously did not have access to cellular coverage.

Alain Sainte-Marie, CEO of Zain Nigeria, says: “This expansion to rural areas throughout the country will have a positive impact on the economic and social wellbeing of these communities.”

Motorola did not disclose financial details of the deal, but did say the network upgrades are expected to bring improved coverage and capabilities for mobile phone users.

Raphael Udeogu, Motorola director of sales for central and sub-Saharan Africa, home and networks mobility, notes: “The increased network capacity being deployed will advance the way people connect and will positively impact Zain's future telecommunications offering in Nigeria.

“It is also indicative of the strong relationship that we have with Zain in Nigeria and the Middle East and Africa region in general.”

According to Motorola, the expansion project has started and is due for completion in early 2010.

Motorola revealed it also has existing agreements with Zain in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan.
