Motorola, VeriSign to deliver secure WAP e-commerce

Johannesburg, 19 Jan 2000

Motorola and VeriSign announced yesterday at the RSA Conference 2000 that they have signed a memorandum of understanding outlining a strategic relationship with the intent to jointly develop and market solutions to enable secure e-commerce transactions to users of -enabled devices.

As an example, consumers will be able to purchase items using their Internet-enabled wireless phone with the confidence that the merchant is who they say they are and their purchase information is private and secure. Merchants will likewise be confident that consumers` identities are valid.

"The continued growth in wireless voice and communications has opened up a broad new frontier for mobile e-commerce applications and services," says Janiece Webb, senior VP/GM of the Personal Networking Group for Motorola.

"By using VeriSign`s global trust infrastructure we expect to deliver unparalleled solutions to new and existing customers and consumers. We plan to enable people to perform critical secure transactions where and when they want to do them. We will bring the Internet to wireless and power to the person with complete `end-to-end` solutions through the carrier or service provider."

"By building the foundations for secure, standards-based, wireless e-commerce, we will enable a broad range of new services for consumers, carriers and service providers," says Richard Yanowitch, executive VP of Marketing for VeriSign. "By combining Motorola`s leadership in the wireless communication market with VeriSign`s proven experience in developing trust services for the Internet, we are accelerating the time when wireless e-commerce is a common, everyday occurrence."

To enable secure and trusted wireless transactions, Motorola and VeriSign intend to jointly fund development of a broad range of solutions for wireless device manufacturers, carriers, consumers and e-commerce service providers (such as financial institutions, media companies, application service providers, and business-to-business and business-to-customer exchanges).

Motorola and VeriSign intend to develop solutions that will address issues of authentication, validation, encryption, non-repudiation and payment. The solutions may include:

  • Server-side solutions - supporting WAP traffic secured using the wireless transport layer security (WTLS) standard.

  • End-to-end client authentication solutions - enabling mobile users to reliably identify themselves and to sign in a way that can be verified throughout the entire communications channel.

  • Directory and validation services - enabling appropriate parties throughout the communication channel to find appropriate users and validate transactions and individuals.
