Mozilla more vulnerable than IE

Johannesburg, 26 Sep 2006

There are more documented vulnerabilities being seen for Mozilla browsers than for Microsoft Explorer, Symantec's latest Internet Threat Report reveals.

For the period January to June 2006, documented vulnerabilities for Mozilla were at 47, while Internet Explorer had 38. Compared to the second half of last year where Mozilla only had 17 and IE 25, there has been a significant increase in documented vulnerabilities for both browsers.

"This just proves that criminals are trying to get to people who are browsing," says Patrick Evans, regional director of Africa for Symantec.

Opera saw a fall in two vulnerabilities since the last recorded period, but Safari, although still low compared to others at 12, has doubled its amount of documented vulnerabilities since the second half of last year.

According to the report, there has been a notable shift as vulnerabilities are increasingly targeting client-side systems, primarily end-user desktop hosts. As part of this shift toward client-side issues, vulnerabilities in Web browsers have become increasingly prominent.
