MS mobile store bans VOIP

VOIP applications will be forbidden from Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile store, along with programs that are larger than 10MB or that change the default browser on a device, states PC World.

They are among 12 prohibited application types that Microsoft listed for developers who register to create for the store.

Marketplace for Mobile is due to release in the second half of the year, along with Windows Mobile 6.5, the next version of Microsoft's mobile OS.

D-Link offers reseller VOIP training

D-Link has completed training for 70 resellers as part of a three-week programme who are now authorised VoiceCenter partners, says CRN.

Ideally suited for businesses requiring up to 50 handsets, and with Microsoft Response Point software, VoiceCenter supports both VOIP and traditional phone and ISDN line support.

Dean Williams, product manager at D-Link, says: "VoiceCenter is a next generation IP system, based on Microsoft Response Point software, which is designed to offer improved functionality, productivity and ease of use at a substantially lower price point.”

VOIP replaces traditional mobile operators

Mobile VOIP is starting to gain traction, and will soon offer a direct challenge to traditional mobile operators, according to a recent report from analyst firm Gartner, reports vnunet.

The growing adoption of flat rate mobile data packages has led the technology to take a significant slice of the $692 billion (R5.7 trillion) global mobile voice market.

"Mass-scale adoption of end-to-end mobile VOIP calling will not happen until fourth-generation networks are fully implemented in 2017," says Tole Hart, research director at Gartner. "Once the basic market conditions are in place, transition to mobile portal VOIP should be fairly rapid because of the inherent convenience and end-user cost savings."
