MS preps cloud apps

Microsoft has unveiled a toolkit for PHP developers building open source applications that help fluff its planned Azure cloud, reports The Register.

PHPAzure is a software development kit for programming to both Windows Azure and the underlying SQL-like Windows Azure Storage service's blobs, tables, and queues.

PHPAzure is an open source project developed with RealDolmen and hosted on Microsoft's CodePlex site.

Intel gets Handy

It seems Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, was being understated when he told analysts chip sales were "a little better than we expected" thus far in the second quarter, because the firm has just splashed out on a new acquisition: OpenedHand, writes The Inquirer.

OpenedHand, which describes itself as “a team of talented and creative people passionate about open source and embedded devices," is a London-based firm that also has offices in Paris and Helsinki.

The firm claims to be passionate about all that is open source and proclaims a firm "commitment to cutting edge research and development".

Nokia, Intel boost mobile telephony

Open source mobile telephony got a boost in the arm this week with the establishment of a joint project between Nokia and Intel to bring advanced communication frameworks to Linux, writes bit-tech.

As reported on Ars Technica, the two companies are looking to build an abstraction layer to provide application programming interfaces to application developers looking to implement mobile telephony within the Linux operating system.

Dubbed oFono, the project aims to bring smartphone-like functionality to the companies' own Linux implementations - Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Mobilin.
