MS reveals rich-client strategy

Microsoft said at its Worldwide Partner Conference that the cloud is the future, but added that rich clients, devices capable of functioning without connection to the Web or a server, will continue to play a major role in assessing it, writes eWeek.

This again places Microsoft in a competitive dichotomy with its largest rival in the online space, Google.

However, persistence on a rich-client strategy also allows Microsoft to take advantage of its area of traditional strength, desktop-based software.

Small Business Server previews unveiled

Microsoft has introduced two previews for its Windows Small Business Server (SBS) product suite, says Redmond Channel Partner.

The previews, code-named SBS 7 and SBS Aurora, which are not publicly available yet, are expected to interest Microsoft partners serving the IT needs of smaller organisations.

The preview releases will be public reviews, and those interested in downloading and testing them can sign up to participate at Microsoft's SBS portal page.

Cisco intros Cius thin client

Cisco has released Cius, a thin client with the potential of replacing knowledge workers' desktop phones, laptops and desktop computers, while offering added video and videoconferencing functionality, writes Computerworld.

"We started by thinking about it first as ... a mobile video device, since customers said 'we love video'," says senior VP of Cisco's voice technology group, Barry O'Sullivan.

"But there was another market transition [under way] and we wondered if this could be a thin client on the desktop as well."
