MS sues Motorola over seven patents
“Motorola is infringing our patents and we are confident that the ITC will rule in our favour,” says David Howard, Microsoft's deputy general counsel for litigation.
According to Microsoft, Motorola-manufactured Android-based devices have infringed as many as nine of its patents, reports Money Control.com.
These patents pertain to syncing e-mail, calendar, and contacts, and notifying applications about changes in signal strength and battery power.
Motorola, on the other hand, has counter-sued Microsoft alleging that the later has infringed as many as 16 of its patents by using them in their Xbox gaming console, Windows-powered servers, PCs, and smartphones.
The hearing comes one week after Google revealed its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola. Post reporter Jia Lynn Yang wrote last week about how the deal gives Google 17 000 wireless technology patents, says The Washington Post.
“We are vigorously defending ourselves against Microsoft's patent attack business strategy,” Motorola said in a statement. “We have also brought legal actions of our own in the US and in Europe to address Microsoft's large scale of infringement of Motorola Mobility's patents.”
