New year's resolutions
The higher the resolution the better the quality of the picture and Microsoft is taking this principle seriously.
In a "Halloween update" released this week, the company announced all sorts of enhancements to its flagship Xbox 360 console, including support for output to the HD video standard which measures 1080 pixels vertically.
There's also support for the 50Hz HDTV display modes if you're lucky enough to own an HDTV and a number of video streaming capabilities added, including streaming video from Windows Media Player and playing video files from data CDs.
A wee little picture
Nintendo's Wii was also in the news for resolution reasons after Nintendo Magazine hinted the console could support higher resolutions. Nintendo has officially corrected this: the Wii will output in 480p only. Both its competitors - the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 - support 720p natively, with higher resolutions available for games developers who want to build in the capacity.
The general availability of both the Wii and the Playstation 3 was revealed by Electronic Arts executives in a conference call this week. It looks like the PS3 will be as hard to purchase this year as the Xbox 360 was last year.
EA guessed anywhere between 500 000 and 800 000 PS3s would be available through the end of 2007, also noting the Wii would ship in numbers of between 900 000 and 1.1 million.
Never say never
The release for Neverwinter Nights 2 is rapidly approaching.
South African gamers eagerly looking forward to the release can rest assured that it will be here on time, says Jason Borea of local games distributor MegaRom.
Thanks to Gamasutra, Eurogamer and Gamespot for the heads ups.
