MTC objects to staging of the Western Province game against the Namibian team

FNB and the Namibia Rugby Union today announced the staging of a friendly match between the Western Province and a Namibian national side amidst objections from MTC which holds the rights to any team that represents Namibia.
Windhoek, Namibia, 30 May 2008

MTC has learned with surprise that FNB Namibia will be hosting the Western Province in Windhoek against a Namibian national side on 7 June 2008.

Mr Albertus Aochamub, GM: Corporate Affairs at MTC explains that "MTC will seek legal recourse, if we have to, in order to protect our rights in terms of the provisions of the agreement with the NRU".

He further states that "Whilst we agree that the national team needs to participate in a few games as part of the preparations for any major international event, it gives the NRU no right to violate the contractual obligations with MTC with impunity. Any team that represents Namibia is covered by this agreement and the arrangement with FNB is a clear breach of that provision. MTC has the first right of refusal should any national games be staged but we were clearly ignored with the game against the Western Province."

Under the agreement, MTC will be investing in excess of N$6 million in Rugby over a three year period ending September 2009. To further demonstrate its commitment to the success of the game of Rugby and the NRU, MTC has recently ensured through additional investments in excess of N$500 000 to get the national team to participate in the last World Cup in France.
