The country's second mobile operator, MTN, has appointed Lambo Kanagaratnam to take over from former CTO Sameer Dave.

Kanagaratnam has been in MTN's employ since 2009, formerly holding the position of CTO of MTN Irancell, prior to this appointment.

During his time at MTN Irancell, Kanagaratnam was responsible for the consolidation of managed services across the network, improving the network quality, and expanding the network by more than 2 000 sites to accommodate the operation's 60% network traffic growth and 40% subscriber growth.

MTN also recently announced a successor to outgoing CEO Phuthuma Nhleko. MTN's group COO Sifiso Dabengwa will take over the helm in March.

The operator also recently told the market it had decided to abolish the COO position. Instead, it will appoint a CEO of MTN International (MTNI) operations, to focus more intensely on the opportunities available to MTNI.

An executive search to identify and appoint a suitable candidate for this post is under way, MTN said. Additionally, a formalised subsidiary board structure for MTNI is being set up.
