MTN SA has called on developers and technology start-ups to submit entries for its Business App of the Year Awards 2014, aiming to promote the local app development industry.
The operator says the awards, which are in their third year, are a partnership between MTN Business, Samsung, Microsoft, Nokia, Mlab and the Core Group. An independent panel of experts in the fields of technology and media will judge the entries, says MTN.
"Winning the awards is not only a prestigious honour in recognition of world-class app development work, it's also a boost for business and nets developers some well-deserved and highly sought-after prizes," says the operator in a statement.
Kobus Ehlers, developer of SnapScan - last year's winner for the App of the Year award - says the accolade has proved to be a springboard for better business opportunities. "Entering the competition forces you to package your product in a way that is presentable and refined, and that is a very healthy process to go through," he says.
SnapScan allows a user to pay by scanning a code displayed in store or with a bill, confirming the amount and approving the transaction with a PIN. Standard Bank recently took on the platform, punting it as part of its mobile payment offering.
MTN notes entries will be judged according to ease of use, intuitive design and simplicity of function. Solving business or consumer problems and innovative ideas will also stand entrants in good stead, according to the operator.
Apps developed within the last year are eligible and can be submitted in the following categories:
Best iOS App - Enterprise
Best iOS App - Consumer
Best Android App - Consumer
Best Android App - Enterprise
Best App use of Microsoft Cloud Services
Best App for the Microsoft Platform
Best Garage Developer App
Most Innovative App
Entries for the awards close on 7 July and can be submitted at www.appoftheyear.co.za.
